When i was approached with a request for an original song for an upcoming organ donation event, I said yes, without hesitation. To have an opportunity to share our story in song, with folks that have lived the same, is an honor without compare.
Our son Robert, was an organ donor at age 15. We have participated in many events over these last fourteen years, and the request makes this one especially gratifying.
You see, this song is meant to connect with parents whose children have given the gift of life, like Robbie did. While I wrote it based upon our own life experiences, it is universal in its message. Throughout our time on this earth, we are all given gifts, and some, in the darkest hour, give the ultimate gift... Life!
Our hearts are with each of you, as you navigate this journey without your loved ones. If you should shed tears when listening, we hope they are tears of joy for the “The Gift”...
He came into the world in the usual way,
Hours of labor and at the end of the day,
A bundle of joy for both mom and dad,
And in that very moment realizing what they had,
He was their Gift...
No longer a toddler but so far from a man,
When his sister arrived, not really part of the plan,
He held her, he fed her, showered her with affection,
All the while wanting her attention,
She was his Gift...
As he grew he displayed an athletic prowess,
On a rink, on a field with moves that would allow us,
To see the total range of his numerous talents,
With remarkable speed and superior balance,
He had the Gift...
Then came the news that no parent should hear,
There’s been an accident and you need to get here,
The prognosis was grave, they’d done all that they could,
But this boy had made a decision, and they knew that it would,
Save the lives of many people that they may never know,
By donating his organs, his last wish would bestow,
Their Gift...
